“Insightful and Funny.
Being an old guy, I was attracted by ‘Forties’ in the title. North American kids at that time could not grasp the seriousness of World War II; it just added another layer of excitement to the business of growing up. Chris Laing’s detailed recall of the period is astonishing in itself. The added bonus is his ability to capture both the difficulty and the fun kids have working out their own problems and their bafflement with adult behavior. A nostalgic and rewarding read.”

“Humour and Finesse”
Excellent writer. I kept thinking: what a nice way to say…what a nice description. Oh, the beautiful image. I have enjoyed tremendously reading this book. I loved the author’s sense of humour and also the kindness that he describes, the sort of kindness that seems to have disappeared today. A deeply human book. The best read I have had in a long time!”
